Interlock - Alcohol Screening Scottsdale

When you first receive a DUI in Arizona, the aftermath can be overwhelming.  There are several steps you’ll need to take, with both the Arizona Motor Vehicle Department and the Court, in order to regain your drivers license and satisfy your legal requirements.  DUI Screenings, Education and/or Treatment classes, MADD classes, Traffic Survival School, and obtaining SR22 Insurance are all possible steps you’ll need to take in order to resolve the charge.  Another step that will be required is installing an Ignition Interlock Device in your vehicle.

What is an Ignition Interlock Device?

An Ignition Interlock Device is a breathalyzer that is installed in a vehicle to monitor and prevent an individual from driving under the influence.  The breathalyzer device requires the driver to provide a breath sample prior to operating the vehicle.  If the Ignition Interlock Device detects alcohol in the breath sample, the vehicle will not start.  The driver will also be required to provide breath samples randomly while driving.  This is called a “rolling retest”.

Why do I need an Ignition Interlock Device?

Various monitoring entities may require you install an Ignition Interlock Device in your vehicle.  These entities may include the Arizona Motor Vehicle Department, Department of Transportation and Arizona Court.  In order to regain your driver’s license after suspension, you will need to install an Interlock device.  If you are convicted of the DUI through the Court, you will be required to install the device in your vehicle for a minimum of 6 months.

What happens if I fail or miss tests?

If you fail or miss tests, your vehicle will not start or operate.  You might also enter into a “temporary lockout” and not be able to submit another breath sample for several minutes, or if you fail too many times you may enter into a “service lockout”, which will not allow you to provide anymore breath samples.  You may also be subject to increased fines, extensions, and/or penalties such as additional jail time.

What’s considered a violation that could constitute a 1 year extension?

  • If the person tampers with the device (anti-circumvention) or attempting to jump start the car
  • If the person attempts to operate the motor vehicle 3 or more times during the ignition interlock period with a BAC of .08% or higher (for minors, it is 1 time or more during period)
  • Missing a random rolling retest for 6 minutes (one cycle) and continuing to operate the vehicle
  • If the person chooses not to provide proof of compliance or inspection when required

Where do I get an Ignition Interlock Device?

We suggest doing your research before choosing an Ignition Interlock Device company.  Some companies will have faulty equipment errors and bad software issues that may extend your time with your device.
